2D topological order on a hollow thin sphere and a non-Clifford gate without magic state distillation

IQIM Seminar followed by lunch

Abstract: In this talk, I will describe a 2D code derived from punching a macroscopic smooth hole (or holes) in the 3D surface code such that the topological order (macroscopic code distance) is preserved on a hollow thin "sphere". The transversal non-Clifford CCZ gate implementation for three copies of 3D surface code can be extended to three copies of this 2D code up to a lattice surgery step with O(d^3) spacetime overhead where d is the code distance. First, I will describe this 2D code and the non-Clifford gate along with an asymptotic universality cost analysis to compare with magic state distillation. Secondly, I will present preliminary results on the performance of this 2D code as a quantum memory and describe how the spherical geometry of the code can be implemented using a looped pipeline architecture in a strictly two-dimensional layout.

The talk will be based on papers with Guanyu Zhu and Tomas Jochym-O'Connor (arXiv:2108.00018 and arXiv:2201.03568) and ongoing works with Arthur Pesah and Zhenyu Cai respectively.

Attendees joining in person must have a valid Caltech UID. Please show your UID at the door [114 E. Bridge].

This seminar will be held in person only.
