Going beyond the Standard Model with linear response theory

Multiple experiments currently target direct detection of beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics with recoil energies from 1 to 50 eV. We will first calculate dark matter-electron scattering rates and the various systematics involved. We will then talk about Compton scattering backgrounds at the energies of interest, going beyond the frequently employed relativistic impulse approximation. We finally relate linear response theory to various BSM physics searches.
