Symmetry breaking in EFTs: from CPV to the axion quality problem
Quentin Bonnefoy, UC Berkeley,

When analyzing symmetry breaking in field theories, it is interesting to think about collective effects. This is particularly true in at least two cases: when there exists a power expansion, as happens for EFTs, and when there are several generations of identical fields. I will illustrate this by briefly discussing CP violation in the SM and in EFTs, before turning to the breaking of the Goldstone shift symmetry in axion EFTs. Eventually, I'll argue that collective effects invite one to revisit the common formulation of the axion quality problem. The talk is in 469 Lauritsen.
