Dipolar Quantum Mixtures of Erbium and Dysprosium: a new tool for quantum simulation
Abstract: In recent years, elements in the lanthanide series, mainly erbium and dysprosium, aroused great interest in the field of ultracold atoms and quantum gases due to their large magnetic moments, the strongest among the periodic table. These atomic species exhibit not only the contact interaction typical of alkali but further display the magnetic dipole-dipole interaction. The interplay between these two interactions, the first being short-range and the second being long-range and anisotropic, is highly nontrivial and enriches the system properties leading to an all-new class of phenomena. With my talk, I will report on the first experimental realization of a dipolar quantum mixture of highly magnetic atoms [1,2] to henceforth present our latest results about the observation of a state with supersolid properties, where a spontaneous density modulation and a global phase coherence coexist .
